Curriculum

BIBLE
Stories from God's Word and the teaching of principles of Christian living begin each school day. Children "hide the Word in their hearts" through Scripture memorization.

READING
The goal of the elementary reading program is to build upon the excellent phonics training received in the preschool. Much of the pupil's reading in social studies, science, and other content subjects requires locating, selecting, appraising and organizing ideas in order to understand and thoroughly digest printed material. Consequently, comprehension skills, advanced work analysis and vocabulary development are stressed to help the pupil increase his ability to read narrative and informational material independently.

MATH
Drill of math facts and measures is an integral part of each day's math activities. Foundational concepts, as well as problem solving, are stressed. In the primary grades, drill and repetition are stressed.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
English grammar, spelling, penmanship, poetry, and creative writing are taught with a goal of preparing children for effective communication.

SCIENCE
God has revealed Himself through His Word and through creation. Each year the students build upon previous knowledge of creation by studying energy and matter, space and the universe, the earth and its cover, and 'living things. All science is taught from a "creation" viewpoint.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS
Our academic program is targeted for students who are able to perform on or above grade level. Sometimes our teachers may need to make “moderate” accommodations to assist students with “minor” learning problems.

A special committee will evaluate children who exhibit learning problems with low grades and/or need special accommodations. This committee normally comprised of two teachers and the principal will determine whether our school meets the child’s academic needs. If the committee decides that a student should not remain at our school for the remaining portion of the school year, or should not return to our school the following school year. Our school reserves the right to dismiss any student who does not meet our school’s academic goals.

A decision to not retain a student in our school for academic reasons will normally be based on the following: the teacher will inform the parents of the child’s inadequate academic performance; the teacher will notify the principal of the child’s learning problems; the principal will observe the child in the classroom and contact the parents; the parents will be asked to obtain an educational evaluation in a timely manner through the public school system or from a private tester (if parents refuse to have their child tested when this is requested by either the head teacher or the principal, the child will not be permitted to return to our school the following school year); the teacher and principal follow the child’s progress; the teacher and/or the principal will meet with one or both parents to discuss the child’s progress. The teacher and principal together will determine when a child should no longer remain in our school. If it is decided that a child should not return to our school the following school year, the parent will be informed of this decision prior to the last day of school.
